please excuse the “borrowing” and not even correctly using the FatBoy Lyrics

OK so I may have taken some poetic license with the lyrics to the Fatboy Slim song, but I just didn’t know how to start this post or what to say after not being in this space for SO LONG! I am thoroughly ashamed to say I have not been practicing what I preach, I have not been adding regular content to my own website – in fact there are more than a good handful of sites over on my portfolio that I have actually redesigned or heavily updated since I last posted, which all need to change. At the start of this year I made a promise to work on as well as in my business, vowing to regularly update my blog and portfolio, not only for new potential clients to see what I can do and what I am about but also to help my SEO and let google know that Individual Design is still alive and kicking! BUT… as you can imagine I have been buried under a ton of new projects and key account work so NONE of those things got done!

HOWEVER!!

Here I am again, six months on trying my best to catch up. Where to begin…..

Olly’s Hair for Men has had a makeover. After almost 3 years the guys had grown out of and gotten over the old style so we designed the new web site to have a slicker, cutting edge (no pun intended) design update, I will post more on that another time because it has got so much positive feedback. Ring on a Wing and With This Ring are other existing customers I have had the pleasure to help with a little site refresh, as well as a very mini facelift over at La Couture Bridal.

we just added a touch of further refinement

New projects so far this year have included another beautiful bridal boutique website design or two! Working with an amazing wedding photographer on his new company logo, branding and website – you can find more details over on the wedding photography web design page Outside of the bridal world iD had the pleasure of designing completely different sites for a business consultant and bathroom fitter (told you it wasn’t just wedding industry web design i do!) I have also added another beauty website as well as working on a project for an international colour consultancy coach. It literally has been full steam ahead!

I have put a hold on any further new projects for the Summer as I am looking forward to spending some time away from the screen with my daughter and getting everything all spic and span over here ready for the Autumn/Winter rush. To find out about my web design services or to book a slot for Autumn/Winter 2016 contact us or get in touch via our free website review.

That’s all for now, But I WILL be posting regular updates from now on so please don’t be a stranger.

Wow time really does fly when you are having fun trying to catch up. Last week was a bit of a whirl wind. My little one does not settle back into the swing of things after a break from nursery, so my mornings were often spent in total havoc and running late – a constant theme for this weeks post!

Lets hope this week is calmer, although judging by my workload, I’m thinking not!

I really did hope to wrap the SO Jewellery website up by the end of last week, but I think it will need another 4-5 hours this week to be ready to show its new owners (probably more like 10 then!)

I was also delayed last week on the 5 star nursery site. There was a little confusion, I thought the client had already arranged hosting but it turns out they had just bought the website builder tool along with their domain name. It does come with its own hosting, but it is very limited and only way to edit the website is via the builder tool. A word of warning here – choose this option with caution. It is severely restrictive both with how you can style your website and also if you decided to change hosts there is no means of taking your website with you. However, if you buy hosting it often comes with a free website builder tool, if that is what you want to use. You also get greater flexibility to use your hosting space as you want to, you can host multiple sites, store images that need to hosted etc. A WordPress website is definitely one of the easiest websites to manage, and you can move it from one host to another whenever you need to, for no extra cost.

Now that 5 star have their hosting sorted, this week I can really get started and move forward with their new website. We have been talking lots about a rainbow of colours, and in my mind the footer and nav bar change colours depending on which page you are on – I like it, now can I do it? I am excited to see!

I am starting an exciting project this week for another bridal shop in the West Midlands. I am really looking forward to the challenge of another bridal shop website, especially as the last one was such a hit with both my client, their clients and my comtemptories, but I am keen to make sure the styles and layouts are as individual as each client.

After a wonderful meeting last week with the owner, I am thrilled to be working on this new website. The company have just updated all of their branding so it is obviously key that I tie the website in with their new style – which is a feminine, floral, with a touch of vintage. The boutique has a sleek, stylish feel to it, and the owners have a modern approach with traditional values. It is going to be fun to try to sync all of these elements to give a true reflection of the business online, and of course in keeping with their new branding.

That’s this week, one to finish and two to start, plus of course all the usual maintenance work. Updating information on The Dressing Rooms, adding new services to Top to Toe and updating Designa Blinds, with the exciting news that they have now opened another showroom.

It’s as easy as 1,2,3 – apparently!

What is your plan for the week ahead? Are you self employed, and struggle like me to keep all your projects on track? If you can somehow make it work, please share your secret to success!

Jo

I know that this is my first post in my new series working week, but I’ve got to be honest, this week is going to a bit all over the place, so the post might just be the same. Mainly because my plan is to catch up and sort out EVERYTHING that hasn’t been done because of the bloody Easter holidays. If you know me, you know I have a 4 year old, and she is with me throughout the school holidays – why, oh why, do they have SO many?

scream

The last 2 weeks have mainly been spent working late into the night, desperately trying to stay on top of my projects, in between managing her social life and CONSTANT hunger – my child tries to eat her own body weight in food on a daily basis, like seriously every day and she doesn’t carry an ounce of weight (not that I am jealous or anything) – but I digress.

This coming week I am due to finish off a web design project which is rather special to me. I am working on updating the SO Jewellery website – my very first venture into self employment! I sold the business a while back and the wonderful new owners have asked me to update the site, to work with their branding  – it is a very strange feeling to be working on the site again and getting paid for it.

A sneaky peek of the new homepage

Moving on from an ending to a new beginning, I am due to start work on a new site for a local nursery. I am really pleased to be working with 5 Star day nursery and can’t wait to get started and be able to let loose with colour and fun shapes to show off a playful, energetic vibe of the setting.

On the design front I am working on a new advert for Bartley Glass which will appear in a local directory. The ad will feature their new logo of course in addition to the same look and style of  their website.

That pretty much rounds up the bulk of my week.

Although, I do also have a number of my regular clients sites to update and do a spot of copy writing for, plus of course, continuing the uphill struggle of trying to add to this one. It is seriously hard – no wonder so many clients pay me to do it for them!

Anyhow, that is me and my week. What have you got planned for yours? Anything exciting happening? Any uphill struggles like me? Share your working week with me and I’m sure we can help each other through it.

I have decided to start writing a series “Working Week” focusing on design projects I am working on that week. I’m not sure that most people who come across this page are going to be interested, but I kind of feel it is necessary for me at the moment and here’s why:

bored

Yup – I bore myself sometimes too :-)

1. It will give me something to blog about regularly, which will help me find my voice and style of blogging. It will also fill in some blanks until I get my blogging brain on and think up some other content, which is, you know… more exciting.

exciting

How I hope you will look when viewing future content!

2. It will help me plan and stay on task with my projects. I find I am always most effective when I have a clear work plan. There is another post in there somewhere about being self employed and managing your own work schedules. See this series is working for me already!

blog ideas growing – check!

3. It will give my current clients a transparent and easy to view way to see that I am working on their websites or logos or whatever. Of course, I do update my clients regularly and towards the end of a build they must get pretty sick of me and all my niggling little questions and emails, but this way everyone gets to see that their projects are getting attention. They will see the stages the projects are going through, plus maybe even a sneak peek of their new site.

I promise I am happier than this when I am working!

I promise I am happier than this when I am working!

I am quite pleased with this series idea now actually, what do you think? Too dull to blog about? Are you a current client? If so, will this help you? Answers on a postcard please, or you know, the normal way and in the box below, is more than adequate.
